5Mother of two precious girlsFeb 14, 2010
I am a big fan of Britax. We own 2 Britax Roundabouts and they are great seats! I was looking to move my 3 year old out of the Roundabout and into the Frontier, and then move my 8 month old into the Roundabout, Rear-facing. I knew I wanted the Frontier because of safety, and especially the side protection from vehicle intrusion since my daughter has to sit by the door. I was a little nervous at some Britax lovers who gave this particular seat poor marks. Most people complain about the installation and something about not being able to move the straps very well unless you remove the seat, adjust the straps and reinstall the seat. I did not run into ANY of these problems. The straps are very easily adjusted. The only way the seat needs to be removed would be to possibly adjust the height of the shoulder starps, and even then the whole seat does not need to be removed. But how often do you have to adjust the height? Just when your child gets taller, and it is very easy to do. In fact, I love the way they designed this because it is SO EASY! The other problem about the installation nightmares, well, I am not one to read the manual or directions before doing things and I barely skimmed the manual. I only did this because of all the horror stories of installation. I have no idea what seat these people where trying to install or maybe what vehicle, but I had no problems. We have a 2003 Toyota Sequoia and it was a piece of cake! The nice thing is that I used the latch attachments because Toyotas seem to be plentiful with those in each seat. This might have made it an easier install for me. I also hooked the tether to the latch on the backside of the seat towards the base. The seat is very secure and tight. It took me all of 3 minutes to do. I loved the Roundabouts, but I really love this frontier and so does my daughter. Maybe I did not encounter the nightmare installation process because my vehicle made it so easy for me. I don't have an answer, all I know is that is was very easy and the seat is fantastic. Another pleasing product from Britax! Thanks for excellent safety for my precious blessings!

4Mixed Feelings...Sep 17, 2009
I like this seat, BUT if you don't have the latch system it is a pain to install. I do have the latch system in my car, so this seat is perfect for me at this point and quite frankly I don't think there is a better quality booster on the market. It is very study, plenty of padding, compact, adjustable and still fits the much bigger kids. (Up to 100 lbs.) This product is basically a better version of the Regent. (Soon this car seat will replace the bulky Regent altogether.)

Cons....

On the flip side, YES without the latch system it is very difficult to install and it takes much more work. With the latch system I can install this car seat in any car within 2-3 minutes and it is tight to they yank...meaning it won't budge and centimeter when I pull on the side of it. However, when I try to install this seat with a seat belt it is a royal hassle taking upwards of 20-30 minutes to get it somewhat snug. I completely understand why some people just give up on it and take it back. Quite frankly, I don't know why Britax didn't stick with the seat belt locking mechanisms that they have on the Roundabout and the Marathons. It made it so easy to use a seat belt to secure the car seat snugly in place.

NOTE: The KEY to installing this seat with the latch system is to use the holes in the front of the seat to pull the latch straps through and yank the latch straps snug while you are kneeling in the center of the seat. If you don't do this, you will NEVER get it secure.

Problem #2 I am also concerned about this car seat because because the user manual says you can't use the latch system for children over 45 lbs. For children over 45 lbs, the seat belt is required for installing the car seat. Basically that means the seat will become a pain in my butt unless I decide to install a lap belt into the car which can be used to secure the car seat instead of the shoulder belt.

Problem #3 If you child ever vomits or poops or spills in the seat (which they ALL do at some point) Britax recommends you wipe the seat clean, but don't wash it. All parents get vomit in a car seat at some point, and we all know wiping clean is NOT AN OPTION. For this purpose I disassembled the seat and washed the cover in the washer with cold water and regular laundry detergent. I then hung it to dry and it came out clean and looked fine. However, putting it back together is much more of a challenge than any other Britax seats. (note: the Roundabout takes me about 3 minutes to put back together and this one about 20)

Other than those three complaints, this is a really safe seat. I can't think of a better seat for bigger kids. It even worked for my neighbor who is 100 lbs and 50 years old. :) We just had to see if she would fit and she did!

4Great car seatJul 07, 2009
My son turned 4 in February and is a pretty tall kid. I searched for a couple of months to find the right car seat that would keep him in a 5 point system for as long as possible. After many reviews, I finally decided to purchase the Britax Frontier. I bought it online at babies R Us. They had a coupon which saved me about $40. The shipping was fast and the seat is red (son picked the color)and looks great. I had it installed by the local fire department. Tip: If you call the fire department directly, they often can get you in without waiting for specific "installation dates". Anyhow, I have a 2001 Honda Civic EX and was concerned about how it would fit. It fits great. The seat comes with 2 cupholder but you can really open up one cupholder due to the door being so close to the other cup holder. The only complaint I have is the straps are poor quality for Britax. For $275, I expected the straps to be better quality. They are pretty flimsy and twist alot. It's ok once the straps are fastened. My son has fallen asleep in it and his head leans to the side instead of dropping down like the last Cosco we had. All in all, the Frontier is a very nice car seat with great features. The fireman said this seat is a very well made and has features that are great for growing kids. I love the fact that I can keep him in a 5 point until he is 80 lbs.

2not up to Britax standardsDec 16, 2008
I've had the Britax Roundabout, Companion, and Boulevard. The Companion chest fastener was kind of chintzy, but otherwise all three lived up to the Britax reputation - safe, comfy, well made, easy to use and easy to install.

Not the Frontier. It is not well made - in two months, the mesh area in the middle of the seat cover is already starting to look a bit ratty, because it snags on my daughter's shoes. I hope Britax will redesign the cover to be like those on its other models. (And send past customers one for free!)

It is also not easy to use. The straps twist up constantly, and I am getting tired of having to take the time to straighten them out while two impatient children fret in the chilly Chicago winter.

That last flaw compromises the seat's safety - what if I don't notice the straps are twisted when I buckle my daughter in one morning?

What a disappointment. I guess the rule that you shouldn't buy a new model of car in its first year also applies to car seats.

5Best car seatDec 12, 2008
My son is large for a 2 year old so this seat was perfect. he loves the arm rest and the cup holder. we had originally purchased the recardo 5 point harness seat but found it snug fit for our son, even though the seat was good up to 80 pounds. we would recommend the frontier.
